On the horizon

It used to be that a flat bike tire was a huge bummer.

Now, …

All right, it’s still a bummer. But it’s less so. And that’s tinged with a bit of curiosity and … even something like excitement, maybe.

Because now there is the question of, what is that tube going to turn into next?

The most obvious answers are already listed in the Stone Hound shop. But those aren’t the only options.

This bike season has seen the emergence of a few promising prototypes.

Here are the real highlights …

The Trail Pup …

… Even though this design is technically older than Stone Hound’s Trail Dog design, what is currently being called the Trail Pup is basically a fledgling version of what is already in the shop. It’s about half the size of the Trail Dog, with a more compact and close-to-the-body carry. The Trail Pup has a top-access zipper, which almost earned it the nickname of the ‘lift rider’ and makes it seem even less likely that anything will just fall out when the bag is unzipped.

The Trail Pup, so far, seems especially suited for a day of riding lifts or an after-work ride or whenever it is you don’t need much more than the essentials … or, perhaps paired with something like the new Glove Box (below) who knows how far you can go.

The Glove Box …

… This is the result of Stone Hound’s first foray into making bicycle frame bags. And, not to seem too proud of the effort or anything but, it’s showing a whole heap of potential.

The basic shape is from a re-purposed early hip pack design. It holds a tool and spare tube and the like easily. It stays where it’s supposed to while riding. And, after getting caught in nearly every rain storm this spring, it’s proven to be very effective at fighting off wet weather.

It has worked so well that it has evolved in two directions, a mountain edition and a road/gravel version.

So, … there are still a few kinks and hiccups to work out in the designs and production processes, but it shouldn’t be too long before these too are ‘hanging’ in the Stone Hound shop. Just maybe don’t go holding your breath waiting for that moment to arrive …
